The national campaign "Detectives of European Projects" in Blagoevgrad ended with a visit to the Regional Waste Management System. On-site and visually, young people were introduced to the results achieved with the implementation of the project "Design and construction of an anaerobic installation for separately collected biodegradable waste for a regional waste management system in the Blagoevgrad Region". The project is funded under the OP "Environment" 2014-2020 and is the largest infrastructure project of the Municipality of Blagoevgrad. This is one of the two projects that the young people chose to learn about in detail in a previous stage of the initiative.
The regional waste management system serves 5 municipalities – Blagoevgrad, Simitli, Rila, Kocherinovo and Boboshevo. The anaerobic installation is of key importance for the functioning of the system and for preserving the ecological balance in the region, commented the expert from the Municipality of Blagoevgrad Elena Pandurska. She told the students about the activities carried out and the results achieved, and the young people had the opportunity to get acquainted with the individual elements of the installation and their functions.
The project "Design and construction of an anaerobic installation for separately collected biodegradable waste for a regional waste management system of the Blagoevgrad Region" has a total value of 41,093,732 BGN, of which almost 29,000,000 BGN are provided by the OP "Environment" 2014-2020, through the European Regional Development Fund.
The anaerobic installation is expected to be operational as soon as possible. Thanks to this installation, a higher level of waste management will be achieved in the municipalities served by the regional system, the amount of landfilled waste will be reduced, separate collection of biodegradable waste will be organized, which will be processed in a safe manner, and the public will be given the opportunity to actively participate in waste management. And such an active civic position was also stated today by the detectives of European projects from the Municipal Youth Parliament and the Language School "Acad. Lyudmil Stoyanov" in Blagoevgrad.
The national campaign "Detectives of European Projects" began in December 2024 and its goal was to raise awareness among high school students about European-funded projects in their locality, as well as to encourage their engagement in monitoring European projects through the use of information and communication technologies and publicly available "open" data. The Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria, Ms. Yordanka Chobanova, also participated in one of the stages of the initiative in Blagoevgrad, who welcomed the young people and awarded them certificates for participation in the campaign.
